At River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation we believe that:
- every person has worth and value, just by being born, and was born loved, loveable, and capable of loving;
- all families matter, regardless of who’s in them and how many;
- how we live our lives matter, and so we focus entrepreneurially on ethical and spiritual practices that help us in our endeavors;
- we celebrate a diverse community with people of varying abilities, languages of reverence, cultures, national origins, gender, racial/ethnic identities, ages and stages, affectional or sexual orientations, socio-economic class, family composition, and politics;
- we are called to heal and transform ourselves and this world for more hope, more love, and more joy.
Unitarian Universalists do not have a creedal test for membership. “Our beliefs” stated above represent an expression for the whole of our congregation. Each person is expected to articulate her or his own specific statement of belief, or credo statement, and to practice the right of conscience. Like many other world religions, Unitarian Universalists have different schools that emphasize certain teachings, traditions, or approaches. River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation is predominantly composed of spiritual humanists, emphasizing the direct transcendent experience known in every culture and time by many names, including, but not limited to “God”; our Jewish and Christian heritages; the teachings of science and the efforts of our lives; the words and deeds of prophetic men and women; and the living wonder of the interdependent web of existence. We celebrate that worship is the center of our life together as a religious community. We encourage every person and family to pursue life-long faith development opportunities, to take on at least one spiritual practice, to support the life of the congregation, to serve in the larger community, to work for justice, and to practice generosity and stewardship in all aspects of living.
River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation was founded to be a special place for interfaith families to explore a way of being religious together without having to forsake the adults’ different faith communities. We encourage interfaith families to nurture their connections with our interfaith sibling communities, and to deepen their own understandings and practice of their birth faith. We also recognize that we have developed from a Christian past into the non-creedal, broad tent that we are today, and that means we have special obligations of inclusiveness and awareness of patterning principles from our heritage. Unitarian Universalism may be a third option and a celebratory way for many families.
