The Rites of Passage programs were conceived as a path for our children to learn and grow in their spiritual development and their understanding of Unitarian Universalism.
Principle Pals Kindergarten
The Principle Pals program is the first of three milestones that mark the spiritual path of Unitarian Universalist children. This program teaches the kindergarten children about the seven principles of our faith tradition. Through discussions and activities that relate to each principle, these lessons will be the foundation for their ongoing spiritual journey.

Kindlers of the Flame 3rd - 5th grade
The second spiritual milestone that marks the path is the Kindlers of the Flame program for grades 3 – 5. This program seeks to teach our children about the history and meaning of our Chalice, to support families in adopting and nurturing the chalice lighting at home and to prepare the children to be Kindlers of the Flame during worship. Children participating in the program are required to write a chalice lighting, write a paper about the meaning of the Chalice, meet with the Minister to discuss their paper and chalice lighting and serve 2-3 years as Kindlers of the Flame.
Affirmation 11th - 12th grade
Our third and final milestone celebrates the transition from childhood to young adulthood. Growing into maturity is a momentous occasion in many religions, and Unitarian Universalism is no different. During our Affirmation program our participants will be challenged to reflect, articulate and practice their UU faith. Our program consists of four major parts: pairing youth with adult mentors from the congregation; discussions and retreats that emphasize self-awareness and UU identity; service to the congregation and community; and a culminating affirmation ceremony. This final ceremony gives the congregation an opportunity to welcome the youth into the adult community. Affirmands will be given an opportunity to join the congregation upon completion of the program. Rites of passage are programs of choice. It is up to the child and their parent to determine if they want to participate. Although there is an age range special arrangements can be made for children who fall outside the grade categories. These programs occur every other year and will be offered again during the 2010 - 2011 school year.
