Why are we called “River of Grass”?
The name was chosen to honor a South Florida treasure – The Everglades. This phrase was made popular by environmental activist, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. We recognize a special responsibility to the Everglades because we are located in western Broward County, which still is home to part of the Everglades, and to which we are indebted for the wonderful place where we live.
Why do we call ourselves “a congregation” and not “a church” or “a temple”?
Unitarian Universalists use a variety of names to describe our religious communities. River of Grass chose “congregation” to be inclusive to interfaith families and because this reflects that River of Grass is not and cannot ever be an individual, but only exists inasmuch as we come together – congregate – for worship, spiritual growth, and social action and justice.
Is River of Grass independent?
We are part of our Unitarian Universalist Association with over 1,000 other congregations, and we are also independently self-governing.
What is the Flaming Chalice?
The Flaming Chalice is the primary symbol of Unitarian Universalism with a long history. Most recently, the flaming chalice spread throughout Unitarian Universalism as a symbol of freedom and belonging, in recognition of how the Unitarian Service Committee used the symbol in its work helping displaced persons and refugees leading into and immediately following the Holocaust. We think of it as a beacon of religious liberty and as a candle lighting the way to your religious home.
